To reduce air infiltration, and to maximize the energy efficiency and watertightness of your doors and windows, it is important to verify your home’s weather-stripping joints. In effect, weather-stripping joints that have split, opened or come loose will reduce your home’s energy efficiency and increase your heating bill. Fogged doors and thermal windows are usually caused by a defective mechanical joint in your weather-stripping.
Watertight weather-stripping on your doors and windows is essential to making them energy efficient. Ambient air contains a surprisingly high level of humidity. When your weather-stripping is in need of repair, ambient air penetrates the pressurized zone in your thermal windows and patio doors.
From that point on, the sun heats your window or patio door, creates a vacuum and makes humidity appear on both of your window panes. Since this process repeats itself, you will see the humidity level increase and water droplets will form inside. At that point, your window or patio door has lost its original thermal R-value.
